Questions to Ask a Family Law Attorney

When consulting with a family law attorney, ask:

  • Are you board-certified in Family Relations Law by the State Bar of NM?
  • How much of your practice is family law?
  • What is your experience with custody cases involving domestic violence?
  • Do you know about SB 441 (2025) and the new prohibitions on reunification treatment?
  • What is your hourly rate and retainer requirement?
  • Do you offer limited scope representation (unbundled services)?
  • Are you familiar with the CYFD investigation and appeal process?
