Dad Court Help.

DAD STRONG // PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to Organize Custody Evidence.

Organization helps you and your attorney find the right fact quickly. The goal is not to overwhelm the court; it is to make relevant information understandable.

Educational information only. Family-law rules and court procedures differ by state. This is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Create a master timeline

Use one row per important event with the date, short description, issue, supporting file, and potential witness. Keep the wording neutral.

Organize by issue

Use categories such as parenting time, school, health, communication, expenses, safety, and court filings. Avoid duplicating the same file across many folders.

Use stable filenames

Name files with the date, source, and short description, for example 2026-07-10_school_attendance.pdf. Preserve original files separately.

Build an exhibit index

Number proposed exhibits, describe each item, identify its source, and note the fact it supports. Follow the court's exhibit rules.

Separate useful from emotional

Remove repeated screenshots, unrelated arguments, and materials that do not address a disputed issue. Keep a private archive if you are unsure, but do not automatically file everything.

Back up securely

Maintain at least two secure copies and protect children's medical, school, and identifying information from unnecessary access.

Preparation checklist

  • Master timeline
  • Issue folders
  • Original-file archive
  • Exhibit index
  • Witness list
  • Secure backup

Where to verify the rules

Use your official state court website and local court self-help center for current forms and procedures. You can also search LawHelp.org and the Legal Services Corporation directory for local legal-aid options.
