Louisiana terminology (civil law)
Custody
Joint or sole custody — the right to make decisions and where the child lives.
Domiciliary parent
The parent with whom the child primarily resides.
Visitation
The time a non-domiciliary parent has with the child.
Best interests
The standard; decided on the 14 factors in La. Civ. Code Art. 134(A).

Support and modification cautions
Louisiana uses the Income Shares model for child support (R.S. 9:315). Custody may be modified on a material change in circumstances plus best interests; child support on a material change (no fixed percentage; incarceration of 180+ days may suspend support).
