DAD STRONG // PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to Build a Family Court Evidence Binder.

A well-organized binder helps you locate documents quickly. Follow your court's filing and exhibit rules; a personal binder is not automatically evidence.

Educational information only. Family-law rules and court procedures differ by state. This is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Section 1: orders and notices

Place the current order, hearing notice, scheduling order, and important procedural instructions first.

Section 2: pleadings

Organize filed complaints, motions, responses, affidavits, and proof of service in date order.

Section 3: timeline and issues

Use a one-page issue list and a dated timeline that points to exhibit numbers. Keep descriptions neutral.

Section 4: proposed parenting plan

Include the exact schedule and decision terms you are requesting, plus school and work calendars that show feasibility.

Section 5: exhibits

Use numbered tabs that match an exhibit index. Preserve originals separately and bring the number of copies required by the court.

Section 6: witnesses and questions

List firsthand witnesses, contact information, the relevant fact each may establish, and concise non-leading questions as appropriate.

Section 7: hearing notes

Leave space to record rulings, deadlines, follow-up tasks, and questions. Obtain the written order after the hearing.

Preparation checklist

  • Current orders

Where to verify the rules

Use your official state court website and local court self-help center for current forms and procedures. You can also search LawHelp.org and the Legal Services Corporation directory for local legal-aid options.
