DAD STRONG // PRACTICAL GUIDE
How Fathers Can Pursue 50/50 Custody.
Equal parenting time is not won with slogans. A strong request is child-focused, workable, and supported by a record showing that you can handle the ordinary responsibilities of parenting.
Start with your state's rules
Custody standards, terminology, filing procedures, and presumptions differ by state. Read your state court's custody materials and the existing order before deciding what to request.
Build a child-centered schedule
Prepare a calendar covering school nights, exchanges, holidays, transportation, activities, childcare, and communication. Explain how the schedule protects stability instead of focusing on what feels fair to either parent.
Document everyday parenting
Keep neutral records of overnights, school involvement, medical appointments, activities, transportation, and expenses. Courts need reliable facts, not a collection of attacks on the other parent.
Show that the plan is practical
Address distance between homes, work schedules, childcare, school attendance, and how decisions will be made. A detailed plan is easier to evaluate than a general request for half the time.
Communicate like a co-parent
Use brief, respectful, child-focused messages. Offer reasonable solutions and avoid threats, insults, scorekeeping, or using the child as a messenger.
Prepare for professional review
Ask a licensed family-law attorney in your state to review your proposed schedule, evidence, and requested relief before filing whenever possible.
