DAD STRONG // PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to Keep a Custody Journal.

A custody journal is most useful when entries are prompt, factual, consistent, and supported by ordinary records such as calendars, receipts, and messages.

Educational information only. Family-law rules and court procedures differ by state. This is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Record facts, not conclusions

Write who, what, when, and where. Avoid diagnoses, insults, speculation about motives, and legal conclusions.

Use a consistent format

For each entry include date, time, event, people present, what happened, action taken, and any related document or message.

Track normal parenting

Record overnights, schoolwork, appointments, activities, meals, transportation, and caregiving. Do not create a journal only when something goes wrong.

Document schedule problems

Note late exchanges, missed time, cancellations, and make-up offers accurately. Preserve the related communication and avoid exaggeration.

Protect the record

Back up the journal, keep original timestamps, and do not alter old entries. Add a new dated correction if something needs clarification.

Protect the child

Do not ask children to write entries, gather proof, or report on the other household. Keep the journal private and secure.

Preparation checklist

  • Date and time
  • Neutral event description
  • People present
  • Action taken
  • Related file or message
  • Regular backup

Where to verify the rules

Use your official state court website and local court self-help center for current forms and procedures. You can also search LawHelp.org and the Legal Services Corporation directory for local legal-aid options.
