DAD STRONG // PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to Document Missed Visitation or Parenting Time.

When parenting time is missed, create a calm record and focus first on the child's safety and the current court order.

Educational information only. Family-law rules and court procedures differ by state. This is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Confirm the schedule

Review the exact date, time, location, notice provisions, transportation terms, and exceptions in the current order or written agreement.

Create an incident entry

Record when you arrived, how long you waited, who was present, what communication occurred, and when you left. Keep receipts or neutral location records if relevant.

Preserve complete communications

Save the full thread before and after the exchange. Avoid repeated calls, threats, insults, or statements that could escalate the situation.

Offer a practical solution

When appropriate, propose specific make-up dates in writing. A reasonable proposal can show that your focus is maintaining the child's relationship with both parents.

Use the correct enforcement process

Do not retaliate by withholding support or future parenting time. Ask a local attorney or self-help center about enforcement, modification, mediation, or emergency procedures.

Recognize emergencies

If you reasonably believe a child is in immediate danger, contact appropriate emergency services and obtain local legal advice promptly.

Preparation checklist

  • Copy of current schedule
  • Incident log
  • Complete message thread
  • Exchange-location proof
  • Make-up proposal
  • Pattern summary

Where to verify the rules

Use your official state court website and local court self-help center for current forms and procedures. You can also search LawHelp.org and the Legal Services Corporation directory for local legal-aid options.
