DAD STRONG // PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to Create a Parenting Plan.

A parenting plan should reduce future conflict by answering predictable questions before they become emergencies.

Educational information only. Family-law rules and court procedures differ by state. This is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Regular schedule

Specify weekdays, weekends, start and end times, school-day transitions, summer schedules, and what happens when school is closed.

Holidays and vacations

List holidays individually, define odd and even years, set vacation notice deadlines, and explain how holiday time overrides the regular schedule.

Transportation and exchanges

State who transports, where exchanges occur, how delays are handled, and whether school or childcare can serve as the exchange point.

Decision-making

Address education, medical care, mental health, religion, activities, and emergency decisions using the terminology required by your state.

Communication

Define parent-to-parent methods, response expectations, child contact with the other parent, and how records or notices will be shared.

Changes and disputes

Include written-change procedures, make-up time, mediation or another dispute process, and the steps required before returning to court when appropriate.

Preparation checklist

  • Weekly schedule
  • Holiday table
  • Vacation rules
  • Exchange plan
  • Decision terms
  • Communication rules
  • Travel notice
  • Dispute process

Where to verify the rules

Use your official state court website and local court self-help center for current forms and procedures. You can also search LawHelp.org and the Legal Services Corporation directory for local legal-aid options.
