DAD STRONG // PRACTICAL GUIDE

Questions to Ask a Family Lawyer.

A consultation is more useful when you bring a short timeline, the current orders, upcoming deadlines, and a clear list of questions.

Educational information only. Family-law rules and court procedures differ by state. This is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Experience and fit

Ask how much of the lawyer's practice involves family law, whether they regularly appear in your court, and who will handle daily work on the case.

Immediate risks

Ask what deadlines, temporary orders, evidence-preservation duties, safety issues, or jurisdiction questions require prompt attention.

Strategy and alternatives

Ask about negotiation, mediation, limited-scope representation, temporary relief, evaluations, trial, and the likely sequence of events.

Fees and billing

Ask about retainers, hourly rates, flat-fee tasks, support staff, billing increments, replenishment requirements, expert costs, and how unused funds are handled.

Communication

Ask how updates are delivered, typical response times, emergency contact procedures, and whether a client portal is used.

Realistic assessment

Ask what facts help, what facts hurt, what information is missing, and which outcomes are realistic. Be cautious of guarantees.

Preparation checklist

  • One-page timeline
  • Current orders
  • Upcoming notices
  • Top three goals
  • Budget questions
  • Notes from each consultation

Where to verify the rules

Use your official state court website and local court self-help center for current forms and procedures. You can also search LawHelp.org and the Legal Services Corporation directory for local legal-aid options.
