ILAO provides free legal information, Easy Forms (guided interviews to fill out court forms), and referrals. Covers family law, custody, divorce, child support, and more.

Illinois Free Legal Answers
A virtual legal advice clinic where you can post civil legal questions at no cost. Volunteer attorneys answer questions about family, divorce, custody, and other civil topics.

ISBA Lawyer Finder
The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) Lawyer Finder service refers you to a local attorney for a $25 / 30-minute consultation.
Board Certification (None in IL)
Illinois does NOT have formal board certification for family law specialists (unlike TX and FL). When choosing a lawyer, look for:
- AAML membership — American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (prestigious, vetted)
- ISBA Family Law Section membership
- Years of family law experience (ask specifically about allocation of parental responsibilities cases)
- Familiarity with your county's court and judges
- Experience with GAL/Child Representative appointments

- Hourly rate: $250-$500/hour (Chicago higher, downstate lower)
- Retainer: $3,000-$10,000 for contested cases; $1,500-$3,000 for uncontested

Parenting Class
