DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA // Legal Help
Find and Evaluate D.C. Family-Law Help.
A focused guide to D.C. counsel, limited-scope help, legal aid, court resources, preparation, and fees.
Dad Court Help is not a law firm. We are not attorneys. This is educational information, not legal advice. Verify current District of Columbia law and court requirements and consult a qualified District of Columbia attorney about your facts.
Start with D.C. resources
Use the D.C. Bar's MyDCLawyer or member resources, Family Law Assistance Network, Legal Aid DC, D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, and Family Court Self-Help Center where eligible.
Do not assume specialization
A directory or Family Law Community listing does not itself prove certified specialization. Ask about current Domestic Relations, support, parentage, protection-order, interstate, and appellate experience.
Match counsel to the issue
Identify custody establishment, modification, enforcement, relocation, CPO/TPO, parentage, support, third-party custody, UCCJEA, or appeal.
Ask about legal standards
Ask which § 16-914 factors matter, whether a safety presumption applies, what proves substantial and material change, and what relief is realistic.
Discuss representation scope
Ask about full representation, limited-scope drafting, coaching, negotiation, mediation, hearing-only work, or document review. Confirm scope in writing.
Understand fees
Request written terms covering retainers, rates, staff, experts, discovery, copies, hearing preparation, trial, appeal, withdrawal, and unused funds.
Prepare efficiently
Bring a concise timeline, current orders, pleadings, service record, income documents, residential calendar, key evidence, witness list, and exact requested outcome.
Flag urgent issues
Disclose immediate safety concerns, CPO/TPO or criminal cases, CFSA involvement, deadlines, interstate facts, military service, and threatened moves immediately.
