Temporary orders involving children

Kansas does not promise same-day rulings on any private interim filing. Emergency hearings are limited. Use the District Court interim procedure and forms, and confirm the receiving court's local intake and deadlines.

A parent can request interim legal custody / residency through the District Court procedure. For an immediate threat, a Protection from Abuse (PFA) petition is a separate, faster route.

Protection from Abuse orders (KSA 60-3107)

Kansas's primary domestic-violence protective order is under KSA 60-3106/60-3107. A temporary order may issue ex parte on a showing of immediate danger; a hearing is held within 21 days. A final PFA lasts a fixed period of 1 to 2 years, extendable. There is no filing fee. Obey every term; only the court can change it.

Kansas child protective (DCF)

Reports of suspected abuse or neglect go to the Kansas Protection Report Center at 1-800-922-5330 (24/7) or 911 for immediate. Kansas law imposes a duty to report for mandated reporters. An unsubstantiated report does not prove it was knowingly false and does not by itself end legal custody or parenting time.
